What is Oatmeal Pie?

Quick oats are the highlight of this historical pie, which has different ingredients.

The filling has sugar, eggs, corn syrup, and vanilla. Mix quick oats into the filling and pour into a pie crust.

It tastes and feels like pecan pie. It is sometimes called "mock pecan pie."

Some say oatmeal pie was invented during the Civil War when Southern pecans were scarce.

Others say it an Amish pie, made when pecans were too expensive.

Vintage communal cookbooks contain the recipe. Traditional Amish cooking is simple and tasty.

No matter its origin, oatmeal pie tastes like pecan pie, costs less to make, and is excellent for nut allergy sufferers.
