Can Dogs Eat Pasta?

It's tempting to act out the Lady and the Tramp scene with your dog, sharing noodles and almost kissing their adorable nose. Is spaghetti safe for them to eat? It's not clear.

Some veterinarians feel your dog can eat little amounts of pasta, but others disagree. The components and amount of pasta consumed by dogs are important. Check for food sensitivities before feeding your cat pasta.

Plain spaghetti is typically OK for dogs. Pasta is made from eggs, flour, and water. These components are suitable for dogs.

Garlic and onions, both fresh and powdered, are harmful. They contain a toxin that can be harmful to dogs who consume them.

Alliums include garlic, onions, chives, and leeks. Ingestion can induce red blood cell damage and anemia in dogs.

Because marinara and other tomato sauces include garlic and onions, do not give your dog pasta with sauce.

Herbs and spices in sauces and pastas can also be irritating to dogs. Too much salt in your dog's diet can cause dizziness, migraines, and seizures.

Oregano may also poison dogs. If you feed your dog basil or black pepper, limit and monitor their consumption.

Pasta dishes frequently contain cheese. Cheese is a tasty treat for well-behaved pets, but too much can lead to weight gain, heart problems, and gastrointestinal issues. To reward good behavior, use cheese sparingly.
